The Muskaan Story
Muskaan was started in 1997 with the objective of providing education opportunities to children unable to access it. Over the years, a critical understanding of ‘education’ and the need to work in an integrated way grew. Muskaan's mission is to develop models of meaningful education for the most marginalized. They serve children and women, mostly tribal migrants in the city’s slums. The organisation’s work includes providing critical support in the area of health as high malnutrition and illness levels are leading to untimely deaths. Child Labor is rampant. Muskaan's main activities are: 1.Conducting educational activities in slums, running a school and residential camps 2.Strengthening the quality of government schools 3.Empowering women to overcome discrimination and building health linkages.
Muskaan’s primary focus is on the education of children from slum communities unable to access mainstream schools. Muskaan applies innovative and engaging teaching methodologies and curriculum relevant to the context of daily life for these children.

The Muskaan Model
MUSKAAN uses engaging, child-centred teaching methods with quality curriculum relevant to the daily life experiences of the child. Muskaan brings these learnings to the government schools, actively aiming to strengthen the government school system. Muskaan's teachings reach over 3,000 children across a number of programs.

THE MUSKAAN MODEL was outlined in Marion's
presentation to the AUSTRALIA-INDIA INSTITUTE
"TIFFIN TALK" SERIES at MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY ON 20 JUNE 2013
The title of the lecture was "Muskaan's keys to unlocking educational disadvantage for children from the slum communities of Bhopal"
The presentation outlined the key features of Muskaan's approach to delivering contextually relevant and effective education practices and highlighted the alignment of these practices with the "Six Principles of Teaching and Learning" which underpin education in Victoria. It was very well received by the audience with several searching questions and follow-up discussions afterwards.
The presentation has triggered several ideas to be investigated for further interaction between Muskaan Support Australia and the Australia India Institute.
